Complex, often contradictory impressions, great demands for achievement, internal and external critics who are never satisfied, a hectic tempo and demands for efficiency are stress factors that often affect every-day life.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is a perspective and an approach that increasingly influences therapy, counselling, pedagogy and leadership. Mindfulness describes a state of mind characterized by a non-judgmental observation of the present experience. In everyday speech, we can describe it as encountering thoughts and emotions and other people with a friendly, open attitude. Mindfulness is often described as a state of mind, and awareness training is a way of moving towards this state. Awareness training comprises simple exercises that help you to be aware of each moment.
Anyone who works with other people in treatment and care, therapy and counselling, in teaching or as a leader will benefit from this programme. Working with mindfulness will give you many advantages, both for yourself and in your work when you apply the mindfulness perspectives.
The programme provides an opportunity for students to experience mindfulness. An introductory eight weeks course in MBSR – Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, is included in the programme. Individuals, who have already attended this course, do not have to attend it again. The programme aims to help students to practice mindfulness on a regular basis and to familiarize them with the current available research on the subject. They should be able to critically reflect upon mindfulness as a perspective and approach in today’s society. The student will also learn to apply mindfulness in his/her professional practice.
Current research indicates that the use of mindfulness produces positive effects in medical and psychological treatment. Studies show that mindfulness helps people suffering from anxiety and depression. Individuals with diverse afflictions experience an increased quality of life even though their afflictions or external life situation remain unchanged. Mindfulness research increasingly includes the teaching and management professions. Concentration and learning ability appear to be stimulated by mindfulness.
Help for professionals
Mindfulness is a potential resource for professionals in various fields. Some areas are especially significant. Firstly, mindfulness enhances health of the professional by preventing stress, anxiety, depression and burnout. Secondly, mindfulness enhances quality of life by engendering an enquiring, open attitude and inspiring the individual to a genuine awareness of his/her surroundings. Research shows that mindfulness promotes basic relational skills, such as the professional’s empathetic abilities towards the people he/she is designated to serve. Mindfulness enhances the quality of work.
