In March 2017, Arnhild Leer-Helgesen defended her PhD thesis Negotiating Religion and Development: Diaconal Praxis in the Bolivian Andes at VID Stavanger.
March 2, 2017 Leer-Helgesen gave her trial lecture on a theme given by the committee: Sustainable Development Goals: Rethinking Diakonia and Transforming the World. On March 3, 2017 she publically defended her thesis with Professor Carlos Emilio Ham-Stanard (Evangelical Theological Seminary, Matanzas, Cuba) as first opponent and og professor Kjetil Fretheim (MF Norwegian School of Theology) as second opponent.
Professor Stephanie Dietrich (VID) has served as chair of the committee and rector Ingunn Moser chaired the public defense.
