About the project
According to Forskrift om en verdig eldreomsorg (the Regulations on Dignified Care for Older People), the care services shall offer conversations on existential issues as part of ensuring a dignified, safe and meaningful old age. Project H.E.L.S.E. at Diakonhjemmet Dialog in Oslo offers group conversations on existential issues for older people, where the aim is to improve the participants’ sense of quality in life. The method they use is Socratic Dialogue, where a facilitator leads the conversations, and where the goal is to come to a consensus on a general question such as ‘What is hope’?
The sample of the study are the older people in Project H.E.L.S.E, and the overall research question in this PhD project is “What significance have the group conversations on existential issues had for the older people?” The main aim of the PhD project is thus to explore what experiences the older people have had from the group conversations in Project H.E.L.S.E. Furthermore, by participating in the group conversations, do the older people experience that their existential desires are being fulfilled? If so, in what way(s)?
