About the project
The aim of this pilot project is to examine whether the International Caregiver Development Program (ICDP) can contribute to the development of communication and interaction in nursing homes that promotes person-centered care. ICDP is a group based preventive, empathy focused, empowerment oriented training program aimed at caregivers to raise awareness and sensitivity in interaction with care recipients. The aim of the program is to make caregivers aware of their own meaning in interaction, put words on tacit knowledge and promote communication and interaction for the care of psychosocial health. Furthermore, it is sought to strengthen both the care recipient's and caregivers' mastering experience and belief in their own resources. The project begins with about 20 employees from different nursing homes participating in group leader training in ICDP. Group leaders then start ICDP groups for employees in nursing homes. In total, the project will include between 80-100 employees in nursing homes. About 50 of these will be asked to participate in different qualitative interviews. The main research question for the project is based on the use of qualitative research methods to investigate employee experience from a new learning area in elderly care: What is the importance of the International Caregiver Development Program (ICDP) for the development of person-centered care in nursing homes? The research questions will be directed towards communication and interaction in practice after employee participation in ICDP groups, experience with the learning process, in addition to the experiences experienced by nurses in nursing homes with the group leader education content and relevance to practice in care for elderly people.
The research questions will be investigated through participatory observation and 3 focus groups through the group process with employees. Furthermore, there will be two focus group interviews with the group leaders. In addition, it will be considered to conduct individual interviews. Analysis and publishing may also include employee and group leader's log through the ICDP course.
