Students on work placements abroad must, as a minimum, take out their own insurance covering travel, accidents and medical treatment. VID does not have valuables insurance. Students are responsible for their own valuables when they are on VID's premises or in work placements.
Insuring work placement students
VID has group accident insurance that covers students on work placements where this is part of their study programme. The insurance also covers students travelling directly between their home and the work placement. Injuries incurred on work placements are covered by the National Insurance Scheme provisions on Occupational Injury. Note that this also applies if you are on a work placement abroad. See the Act relating to industrial injury insurance and the Damage Compensation Act. The employer is defined as the organisation in which the student is undertaking his/her work placement.
Students must complete a claims form, which is available from the work placement organisation. The form is then submitted to the organisation’s management and a copy sent to VID Specialized University, Division for Academic and Student Affairs, PO Box 184 Vinderen, NO-0319 Oslo, Norway.
The form for reporting occupational injuries or illnesses incurred whilst working in Norwegian or international territory is completed at the place of work, and then sent to the NAV office in the town where you are registered.
Injuries to patients or third parties
VID has third-party insurance that covers injuries inflicted on patients, third parties or fellow students. This insurance also covers work placements abroad. For injuries to be covered by this insurance, there must be a legal liability for injuries and the work placement must be in accordance with applicable rules and regulations. Injury encompasses death or illness that students inflict on others in the performance of their duties. The insurance does not cover injuries or illness transferred through contagion.
Students are responsible for their own safety whilst studying abroad. You must take out your own travel and accident insurance and have any necessary vaccinations before travelling. You must cover these costs yourself. Travel insurance documentation must be presented before departure.
