The main interest of my study is to discover changes concerning the views on religion occurring in a selection of respondents' stories about their interfaith friendship. To attain the aim of the thesis I want to examine the significance of interreligious friendship for the perception of religion among Muslims and Christians in the southern part of Norway. In other words, I want to investigate if and how friendship between persons with different faiths lead to changed perceptions of their own religion, the religion of their friends and the relationship between the two religions. Based on the specifications the main objective can be described as: An interview study on perceptual religious changes occurring in friendships between Christians and Muslims in the South of Norway.
The study will be twofold: A descriptive section and an analytical section. In the initial section of the project I let the informants freely describe their friendship through interviews; while I'm in the second part will analyze my empirical interview material to find out if and how the respondents describe changes, development and learning in relation to their interreligious friendship. In the analytical part, I will analyze and discuss the stories of friendship in light of the theoretical perspectives in my theoretical frame of reference. The frame of reference will mainly include missiological theory that moves in the sphere of interreligious studies. I also include some knowledge from sociology of religion, social psychology and social network theory.
