About the project
My project is a critical analysis of chapter 19 in the Book of Isaiah. This chapter deals exclusively with ‘Egypt’ as a literary motif, and it is a text that has played and continues to play a significant role in Egyptian Christianity and theology. There is a tension in the text between negative perspectives (first half of the chapter: ‘Egypt’ will experience judgment) and more positive perspectives (second half of the chapter: ‘Egypt’ will take part in a future of blessing and salvation). My project approaches this tension from literary perspectives, using rhetorical theory and methodology as an entry to the text, and hoping to establish a reading that makes sense to the text both as a historical artefact and as a contemporary source of theological reflection.
